Early Origins of the Avalos family

The surname Avalos was first found in northern Spain at Abalos, in the province of Logrono. Etymologists note the name signifies a “native of Abalos” and the progenitor was someone who hailed from that location. The place name Abalos is, in turn, derived from the Basque article “a” signifying “the” and the Germanic term “bald”, meaning “bold” or “daring”, together with the plural form “s”. Together, the place name Abalos could be interpreted as “the place of the bold”. It is generally thought that the surname Avalos had its beginning with a Visigoth family of this name that established itself in Spain during the Gothic invasion in the fifth century.

Descendants of this family migrated to Aragon, and from there to Andalucia, in order to fight in the Reconquista. They were the marquis de Pescara. Alfonso I of Aragon branched firstly to Castile, and thence to Naples in Italy in the 15th century.
